A desperate search for a missing California woman ended in tragedy, but a swift investigation by police led to a quick arrest in connection with her death.

Renia Lewis, a 28-year-old resident of Vallejo, was reported missing on September 28, 2025. VPD officers immediately launched a search, completed a missing person’s report, and entered her information into the statewide database.

The initial investigation led officers that same day to a home in the unit block of 14th Street, where there were indications Lewis may have been present before she went missing. Officers conducted a welfare check and an initial search of the home, but found no signs of her.

As the case intensified, the VPD sought and received approval for an Ebony Alert on September 29, despite Lewis not fully meeting the established criteria, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The department also partnered with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which provided expert resources and investigative support.

Tragic Discovery and Arrest

The breakthrough came on September 30, 2025. Based on new information, detectives returned to the 14th Street residence with a search warrant. During a more thorough search, officers discovered a concealed entry to the attic. Inside, they made the tragic discovery of a deceased female, now identified as Renia Lewis.

Investigators quickly developed information identifying 41-year-old Vallejo resident Douglas Irwin Shaw as the suspect in her death. Officers from the Problem Oriented Policing (POP) Team located Shaw at his place of employment and arrested him without incident.

Following his arrest, Shaw provided a statement to detectives, admitting responsibility for the “heinous crime.” He has been booked into the Solano County Jail for murder.

In the wake of the tragedy, the VPD’s Neighborhood Impact Team (NIT) responded to the area, providing trauma-informed outreach and connecting affected residents with support resources.

“This was a heartbreaking, senseless act of violence that has no place in our community,” said Chief Jason Ta. “I am proud of our officers and detectives for making an arrest and solving this case. Above all, our thoughts are with the decedent’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”

The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with further information to contact the Vallejo Police Department.
