A Chicago-area disappearance that baffled authorities for four years has come to an end after a missing Milwaukee teenager was located alive in Blacksburg, Virginia, where officials say she was held captive.
Joniah Walker vanished on June 23, 2022, at the age of 15. According to law enforcement, Walker traveled via an Uber arranged by a man she had communicated with online for several years, taking the ride from Milwaukee to meet him outside a Chicago movie theater. Investigators report that the man convinced her to meet up and subsequently held her against her will.
Walker’s parents noted that a turned-off cellphone immediately signaled trouble on the day she disappeared.
“Her dad called me and was like, ‘Her phone’s going to voicemail.’ I knew immediately it was just off,” a family member said.
Following her disappearance, Walker’s family and friends launched a public campaign to find her while criticizing the initial response from the Milwaukee Police Department. Relatives gathered their own evidence, including local surveillance footage, and expressed frustration over the law enforcement response.
“Why didn’t the police go knock on people’s doors? Like everybody on that block has a Ring camera. We got the videos, not the police,” one relative said.
“No one interviewed me; no one sat me down. It was us versus the police stations with a glass between us,” another family member stated.
Walker, now 19, was located 730 miles away in a small frame house in Blacksburg. Police state she suffered physical and sexual abuse during her captivity under 37-year-old Owen Anderson. Court records indicate Anderson disposed of both her personal cellphone and a burner phone he had previously provided to her in a sidewalk trash can.
Milwaukee County authorities recently filed kidnapping and child abduction charges against Anderson. He remains in custody in Virginia pending extradition and an initial court appearance in Wisconsin.
The Milwaukee Police Department declined requests to discuss the specifics of the abduction or the handling of the investigation. Authorities had previously stated there was no evidence suggesting Walker was targeted by a larger network.
“I can assure you we have no reason to believe that she was involved in human trafficking,” Milwaukee Police Officer Jamie Sromalla told local news station WTMJ in 2025.
In a statement to NBC, a Milwaukee police official reiterated that stance, maintaining that describing the case as human trafficking would be inaccurate. Court records, however, confirm that charges of kidnapping, child abduction, and sexual abuse have been filed in connection with her multi-year captivity.
