MONROE COUNTY, Fla.- A 63-year-old Mississippi woman died Tuesday afternoon following a snorkeling incident in the waters off Key West.
Lecia Elizabeth Spriggs, of Madison, Mississippi, was snorkeling near Mule Key with a commercial excursion company at approximately 1:30 p.m. on May 26, 2026, when she was discovered unresponsive in the water.
Crew members and emergency personnel immediately began administering CPR on-site. The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene and transported Spriggs ashore.
From there, she was rushed to the Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island, where she was later pronounced dead.
Authorities stated that foul play does not appear to be a factor in the incident. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death, and those official results remain pending.
