‘A Necessary Step’: Trump’s New ‘Department of War’ Backed by Hawley, Aims to Reverse ‘Biden’s Ideological Drift’

In a move aimed at refocusing the U.S. military on its core mission, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to rename the Department of Defense to the “Department of War.” The change restores the historic name of the department, signaling a shift that key administration officials and allies say is necessary to rebuild the military’s fighting spirit.

During an appearance on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” on Friday, Missouri Senator Josh Hawley voiced his strong support for the decision. “Absolutely, of course,” Hawley said, framing the name change as a vital step to reverse what he called the “ideological drift” of the Biden administration. “What Biden did for the last four years by turning the military into a giant DEI seminar has got to end.”

Hawley criticized the previous administration for what he described as using the Pentagon as a vehicle for progressive social experiments. He cited examples such as “transgender surgeries in the military” and funding for abortions for service members, arguing that these initiatives distracted from the military’s primary duty to “defend America.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed this on Wednesday, stating that the name change is part of a broader “cultural reset” within the military’s leadership.

Hegseth explained that the administration’s goal is to cultivate a fighting mentality among troops. He has already taken steps to enhance military readiness, including ordering the creation of the Joint Interagency Task Force 401, a new unit designed to unify anti-drone operations across all branches of the armed forces.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll will lead the new task force, which will replace a smaller Army-only initiative and draw on a wider range of resources to bolster air defenses both domestically and overseas.

The Army has already been conducting real-time exercises in Poland under “Project Flytrap” to test key systems, as drone warfare continues to evolve and reshape modern combat.
