Police in Mississippi have arrested a 40-year-old mother after the remains of her daughter, who had Down syndrome, were discovered hidden in a closet.
The investigation into the whereabouts of Mykyra Clemons began on March 17. According to WDAM, a man contacted local authorities to request a welfare check, noting that he had not seen his sister since January.
Family members were concerned because Mykyra was unable to care for herself. Rosie Atkins told WREG that her nephew eventually called the police after allegedly seeing a body inside a bag within the home.
When initially questioned by officers, Cynthia Clemons reportedly gave conflicting accounts of where her daughter was. WREG reports that the mother allegedly claimed Mykyra was staying with a woman who also had a daughter with Down syndrome.

Due to the inconsistent stories, officers obtained and executed a search warrant the following day. During the search, they found Mykyra’s remains in a closet. Reports indicate that the body appeared to have been there for several months.
Cynthia Clemons was taken into custody and faces charges of evidence tampering and abuse of a vulnerable adult. Authorities stated that additional charges could be filed depending on the results of an upcoming autopsy.
