WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – A 24-year-old Winter Haven man is facing nearly 50 felony charges after a mother in California found disturbing messages on her seven-year-old daughter’s phone, sparking a cross-country investigation that ended in a raid this week.
Alex Joel Melendez was arrested Thursday evening and charged with 49 counts of enhanced possession of child pornography. Police say the investigation began just days earlier, on January 13, when detectives in Winter Haven received a referral from the Yuba City Police Department in California.
According to authorities, a mother in Yuba City confiscated her seven-year-old’s cellphone and discovered illicit communications. She turned the device over to local police, who traced the suspect back to Winter Haven. Using subscriber information, including an email address and birth date, investigators identified Melendez as the individual behind the screen.

On January 15 at approximately 6:40 p.m., Winter Haven detectives, assisted by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant at Melendez’s residence on Cambridge Drive.
During the search, investigators reportedly uncovered significant evidence of exploitation, including explicit photos, videos, and vulgar messages exchanged with minors via Snapchat. Police said Melendez’s messages often included personal details, such as his first name and age, which helped corroborate his identity.
Following his arrest, police say Melendez admitted to soliciting minors for nude images and videos since early 2024. He reportedly told detectives he did it for financial gain, intending to sell the material. Melendez allegedly confessed that he would randomly add users on Snapchat to initiate conversations and direct the victims on what to do.
According to the arrest report, Melendez acknowledged he knew he was communicating with children based on their physical appearance in the images. He also admitted to circumventing bans on social media platforms; when blocked from Snapchat or Instagram, he would simply create a new account within a week to continue his activities.

Melendez has been charged with 49 counts of enhanced possession of child pornography, a second-degree felony. Police indicated that additional charges are likely as forensic experts continue to analyze his electronic devices.
Winter Haven Police Chief Vance Monroe praised the swift action of the agencies involved.
“My detectives worked tirelessly and with a sense of urgency to bring this monster into custody,” Chief Monroe said in a statement. “Each video or photograph he uploaded feeds the child exploitation industry and victimizes these young lives over and over. Parents need to take charge and view all of your child’s devices whether it’s a gaming console, cell phone, tablet or any other electronic devices.”
Authorities are urging anyone who suspects their child may have been victimized to contact the Winter Haven Police Department immediately.
