Florida Senator Ashley Moody voted Thursday to advance the nomination of Senator Markwayne Mullin to serve as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. The vote, held within the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, officially moves the nomination to the Senate floor for final consideration.
During the session, Moody focused her questioning on the operational challenges currently facing the department. She specifically addressed the impact of border policies over the last four years and pressed Mullin on his specific plans to disrupt cartel operations involving the trafficking of migrants and minors.
“Democrats jeopardized our national security with four years of reckless border policies under Biden, and now they continue to do so by refusing to fund the very agency charged with keeping us safe,” Senator Moody said following the vote. “Senator Mullin is a fighter and a true patriot. I cannot think of a better pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security at this time to keep Americans safe.”

Moody, who previously served as Florida’s Attorney General, has long been a vocal critic of federal border management and a proponent of increased support for law enforcement.
During the hearing, she acknowledged the unique daily pressures placed on DHS personnel and asked the nominee how he intended to meet those security threats.
The nomination now moves to the full Senate for a final vote. If confirmed, Mullin will take over leadership of the agency responsible for border security, counterterrorism, and emergency management.
