HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. – Hillsborough County and Dawning Family Services on Wednesday, May 11, will celebrate the completion of a $2 million project that transformed a former funeral home into a modern complex that will offer a wide variety of services to families that are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless.

The Dawning Family Welcome Center will serve as headquarters for the nonprofit group’s efforts to help families with children by providing housing and other services like job and life skills training.

Hillsborough County provided $2 million in Community Development Block Grant funds to do extensive plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work and create training rooms, computer labs, and office space. The funds also were used to improve the parking lot, driveway, fencing, fire suppression and drainage systems, and other major projects that will allow for future expansion on the site.

The renovations will provide stability and sustainability for residents in Hillsborough County through the programs offered at the facility.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Dawning Family Services and County officials will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the Family Services Center, 6718 N. Armenia Ave., Tampa, FL 33604.

Hillsborough County has prioritized addressing affordable housing issues, investing more than $54 million into the community in 2021, directly impacting more than 24,300 households.

The programs and services funded by the County focus on creating new affordable housing opportunities, training for residents to further their careers to afford homeownership, and infrastructure improvements that enhance the communities around them.
