MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle said on Friday that Vice President Kamala Harris did not give detailed answers on her economic policy during their recent interview “because she’s a politician.”
Ruhle conducted Harris’ first solo interview since becoming the Democratic Party’s nominee on Wednesday night, in which she openly stated afterward that the vice president did not give “clear” and “direct” answers about key issues. The MSNBC host scoffed at suggestions that she held a “softball interview” with the vice president, arguing that it is a politician’s tendency to not give detailed answers during a conversation with the “Morning Joe” panel.
“It’s hard because many people feel like she’s just speaking in platitudes, she’s speaking about an economic vision and she’s not giving details. She’s got an 80-page detailed policy proposal, and do I think that she answers every single question and gives people exactly what she wants? She doesn’t. You know why? Because she’s a politician, and none of them do. They all speak in platitudes,” Ruhle said.
During the interview, Ruhle touched upon Harris’ proposed economic policies, tariffs, and whether or not she ever worked at McDonalds. Harris said the idea of across-the-board tariffs should not be loosely “thrown around,” and further accused Republican nominee Donald Trump of not being “serious” about the issue.
The vice president further reiterated her plans in the interview to give $25,000 down payment assistance for first-time home buyers and offer $6,000 child tax credits.

Ruhle criticized Trump for allegedly “giving absolutely nothing” in policy proposals besides calling for mass deportations of illegal immigrants. She argued Harris needs to answer questions on why the former president is polling better on the economy.
“The thing that I think she needs to answer for more is despite all of the economy wins over the last 4 years, despite the fact that Donald Trump emotionally connected with that blue-collar worker but he didn’t deliver for that blue-collar worker, she needs to solve for why he still polls better on economic issues with voters because that to me is mind boggling,” Ruhle said.
An Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll from Sept. 20 found the former president leading Harris 43% to 41% on the economy, while a New York Times and Siena College poll from Sept. 19 found that Trump is leading on the economy 54% to 41%.
