St. Petersburg Man Dies After Collision Chain Involving Tractor-Trailer In Hillsborough County
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 on Tuesday evening resulted in the death of a St. Petersburg man and left another driver with serious injuries. The fatal collision occurred at approximately 7:20 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway.
According to preliminary reports, the incident began when a Nissan Rogue, driven by a 38-year-old woman from Lakeland, was traveling at an unusually slow speed in the outside lane of I-75 just south of Fletcher Avenue.
A Mitsubishi Mirage, driven by a 67-year-old St. Petersburg man, was traveling in the same lane directly behind the Nissan.
Troopers say the Mitsubishi Mirage overtook and collided with the rear of the Nissan Rogue. The impact sent the Nissan to the outside shoulder, where it struck a barrier wall. The Mitsubishi then spun into the inside center lane, directly into the path of a northbound tractor-trailer, driven by a 43-year-old man from Loganville, Georgia. The tractor-trailer subsequently collided with the Mitsubishi.
The drivers of both passenger vehicles sustained serious injuries in the sequence of collisions.
The 67-year-old St. Petersburg man driving the Mitsubishi Mirage was transported to an area hospital but later died from injuries he suffered.
The Lakeland woman driving the Nissan Rogue was also transported with serious injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured in the incident.
