Senator Rick Scott is taking a hard line against NBC News and its parent company, Comcast, following an interview with Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel.
In a formal letter sent to network executives, Scott criticized the recent “Meet the Press” segment, claiming the network provided a platform for a dictator without sufficient pushback or accountability.
The Florida Senator’s frustration stems from an April 12, 2026, broadcast where host Kristen Welker sat down with Díaz-Canel. According to Scott, the interview failed to address the regime’s long history of human rights abuses, including the imprisonment of political activists and the lack of democratic elections.
Scott specifically took issue with Welker’s framing, noting that she described the interview as “an honor” and allegedly allowed Díaz-Canel to avoid direct answers regarding his grip on power.

“Your network’s failure to adequately highlight the myriad crimes of the Cuban regime and hold Díaz-Canel accountable for them during that interview only lent more legitimacy to the regime,” Scott wrote in the letter addressed to Brian Roberts, Cesar Conde, and Carrie Blumenstein.
Scott highlighted several topics he believes the network glossed over, such as the “mass pardon” of political prisoners announced following talks with the Trump administration.
The Senator pointed out that despite the announcement, only one prisoner, Alexander Díaz-Rodríguez, has actually been released. Scott included photos with his letter that he says show Díaz-Rodríguez was tortured and malnourished during his time in custody.
The Senator also listed specific questions he felt went unanswered or unasked, including inquiries into Cuba’s “overseas medical missions,” which he characterized as slave labor, and the country’s strategic alliances with Russia, China, and Iran. Scott argued that by not pressing for details on internet freedom and the right to peaceful protest, the network effectively handed a “megaphone” to a despot.
This latest push follows Scott’s ongoing efforts to ramp up pressure on the Cuban government. He recently urged President Trump to expand sanctions and diplomatic pressure against the Castro/Díaz-Canel administration. Scott concluded his letter by calling on NBC to return to a “free and fearless press” model rather than “papering over” the realities of communist governance 90 miles from the Florida coast.
