Nearly 70 Top Conservatives Issue A Statement Praising Rep. Gaetz, Holdouts Standing Firm With McCarthy

They were called rebels, holdouts, and even “terrorists,” by someone on their own side, no less, for daring the challenge Kevin McCArthy’s bid to become the new speaker, yet Republican conservatives in the House like Reps. They were called rebels, holdouts, and even “terrorists,” by someone on their own side, no less, for daring the challenge Kevin McCArthy’s bid to become the new speaker, yet Republican conservatives in the House like Reps. Matt Gaetz, Byron Donalds, and Lauren Boebert are beginning to reap the rewards of their muscle-flexing.

For example, McCarthy’s first act on day one was to push through in a party-line vote a bill that would repeal President Joe Biden’s plan to hire 87,000 new IRS agents.

On Tuesday, a group of 69 prominent conservative leaders issued a statement praising the concessions Gaetz and the other 20 hardliners won from McCarthy, CNSNews.com reported on Tuesday.

The group noted that even after many pundits, including some so-called conservatives, said it could not be done, the rebels secured a commitment from McCarthy that was “truly transformational in how the House of Representatives should be run.”

“It levels a body blow against the DC political cartel that colludes against the American people,” they added.

The statement noted that House conservatives, primarily from the Freedom Caucus, now hold procedural power to control how all major bills and amendments flow — “independence from Leadership not seen in nearly 60 years.”

The group then ticked off some of those other provisions, including a special committee to investigate and hold accountable the “weaponized national security state,” and a pledge to balance the federal budget in 10 years by cutting “woke and weaponized government.”

“This agreement would not be possible but for the early and immediate five members who defined the art of the possible by publicly declaring their opposition to Mr. McCarthy. And now this agreement must be the foundation moving forward in the House of Representatives for all future Speakers,” the group concluded.

In addition to Gaetz, the original five include Reps. Andy Biggs, Ralph Norman, Matt Rosendale, and Bob Good.

Among those conservative leaders who signed the statement were Steve Moore, an economist and former adviser to former President Donald Trump; former GOP Sen. Jim DeMint; Brent Bozell, founder and president of the Media Research Center; Ken Cuccinelli, former attorney general in Virginia; and David Bossie, president of Citizens United, the group that successfully argued to the Supreme Court that blocking corporate campaign contributions within 60 days of an election was unconstitutional.
