A Sunday afternoon errand run turned into a scene of deadly violence outside a Savannah Target, leaving a father of three dead and a community questioning how a dispute over a parking space could escalate to murder.
Authorities have charged 30-year-old Tyler Linn with murder and aggravated assault following the shooting, which occurred in broad daylight on Abercorn Street.
According to the Savannah Police Department, officers rushed to the retail store’s parking lot around 4 p.m. regarding a shooting. There, they found Matthew Traywick suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, Traywick did not survive.

The catalyst for the killing appears to have been remarkably trivial. Savannah District 6 Alderman Kurtis Purtee confirmed to local outlets that the fatal altercation stemmed directly from “an argument over a parking spot.”
Linn, identified by police as the shooter, did not flee. He remained at the scene until officers arrived and took him into custody. Local reporting indicates Linn previously served in the U.S. Army from 2015 to 2023.
The death has left a family shattered. While police have not released Traywick’s specific age, a GoFundMe campaign established for his family describes him as the “sole provider” for his wife and three young children.

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson issued a statement condemning the incident, calling it a “tragic act of violence in a place where people should feel safe.”
“No disagreement over a parking space, or anything else should ever end in the loss of life,” Johnson stated. “This needless, unnecessary violence underscores the daily pain felt by families across our city.”
As of Monday, the investigation into the shooting remains active.
