New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker Slams Supreme Court As ‘Corrupt’ And Calls For Overhaul

Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) did not hold back during his appearance on Meet the Press Sunday, launching a wide-ranging critique of the U.S. Supreme Court, current military involvement in the Middle East, and the internal direction of the Democratic Party.

Speaking with moderator Kristen Welker, Booker characterized the Supreme Court’s recent decision to limit the Voting Rights Act (VRA) regarding redistricting as a historical failure. He argued the ruling would effectively strip political power from Black Americans, comparing it to infamous legal precedents like Plessy v. Ferguson.

“This will go down in history as one of the most wrongheaded decisions the Supreme Court has ever made,” Booker said. He rejected Justice Samuel Alito’s majority opinion that race-based decision-making is unconstitutional, calling the court “profoundly hypocritical” and claiming the move sends the country back to the disenfranchisement of the 1800s.

The Senator went further, labeling the institution a “corrupt court” and noting that a “corrupt shadow” hangs over its members. He pointed to reports of justices accepting lavish gifts and travel from billionaires as evidence for the need for strict ethics reform and term limits. When asked about expanding the size of the court, Booker focused on legislative changes and term limits as a “precursor” to broader shifts, noting that any real reform must start with changing the makeup of Congress.

On the international front, Booker addressed his recent vote against sending more arms to Israel. While affirming his support for Israel’s long-term ability to defend itself, he described the current conflict as a “disaster” that endangers American, Israeli, and regional lives.

“I will not support more military armaments to conduct what I think is a disaster,” Booker stated, placing blame on both the Israeli leadership and President Donald Trump. He called the current situation a “stalemate with Iran” and described Trump as an “embarrassment on the world stage” whose policies have led to American military casualties and rising costs at home.

Turning to domestic politics, Booker weighed in on the future of the Democratic Party following Vice President Kamala Harris’s comments about a 2028 run. He advocated for a wide-open field, saying, “I hope we have the most robust ’28 primary there is.”

He also joined calls for the Democratic National Committee to release its “autopsy” report of the 2024 campaign, though he stressed that the immediate priority should be mobilizing voters for the upcoming election.

Despite high tensions, Booker expressed confidence that Democrats could reclaim the House of Representatives by appealing to the “75% to 80% of Americans” who are dissatisfied with current economic pressures and foreign entanglements.

“This is a chance for America to reject a president that is making their lives more difficult,” he said.
