New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted on one count of fraud by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia on Thursday.

The charge against the sitting Attorney General stems from a federal mortgage fraud investigation. While specific details of the allegation remain limited, an anonymous source familiar with the proceedings indicated James was indicted on a single count related to a home purchase.

James, currently serving her second term as New York’s top lawyer, has previously admitted to making an “error” in filling out forms related to the transaction—an admission her critics view as an attempt to minimize a serious legal offense.

James’s lawyer immediately claimed the charge is a “bogus criminal case,” suggesting it was concocted to settle a “personal vendetta” by President Trump.

This federal action against James is particularly notable given her own aggressive pursuit of political opponents. During her 2018 campaign, she openly stated her intent to investigate Trump, vowing to “shine a bright light into every dark corner of his real estate dealings.”

James, a second-term Democrat, later gained national attention for leading a civil lawsuit that resulted in a staggering judgment against the President and his businesses for alleged over-valuation of assets.

Conservatives widely viewed that case as a clear example of a Democratic official weaponizing state power for partisan ends.

This indictment, following a string of recent high-profile criminal actions, turns the tables. Now, James herself faces the scrutiny of a federal investigation into her own alleged conduct.
