Representative Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) is advocating for bipartisan cooperation with President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, emphasizing the importance of tackling pressing national issues and criticizing the rise of extreme political ideologies in both parties.

In a candid discussion on Fox News America’s Newsroom, Suozzi highlighted the need for Democrats and Republicans to work together on key issues, including border security, immigration reform, inflation, and economic growth.

“I love America and want people to work together to solve the problems we face,” Suozzi said. “Most elected officials, Democrats and Republicans alike, want us to secure the border, fix the immigration system, and make our economy stronger.”

Suozzi’s remarks align with his recent op-ed, where he urged his party to adopt a pragmatic approach toward President-elect Trump, focusing on areas of mutual agreement rather than partisan conflict.

Suozzi identified immigration reform as a prime opportunity for bipartisan action, suggesting that lawmakers should separate the issue from broader legislative debates.

“Secure the border, fix the asylum system, and address the Dreamers. These are areas where Democrats can support meaningful progress,” Suozzi said. He argued that taking a pragmatic approach to immigration could garner broad support while addressing one of the nation’s most contentious issues.

The congressman did not shy away from addressing what he sees as a significant hurdle to progress: the influence of political extremes on both sides of the aisle.

“Everyone’s been intimidated by the extremes, whether it’s the far left or the far right,” Suozzi stated. “Most politicians are pandering to their base instead of talking about real solutions. That’s what’s killing our country.”

He pointed to the rise of divisive rhetoric, such as calls to defund the police and other polarizing positions, as contributing factors to the public’s disillusionment with politics. Suozzi also acknowledged that Democrats’ leftward shift has cost the party significant support, a sentiment echoed by many centrist Democrats following the 2024 election.

When asked about potential opposition to Trump’s immigration policies from states like California and New York, Suozzi urged Democrats to embrace common-sense measures.

“Democrats would make a big mistake to oppose the idea of securing the border and deporting criminals,” he said. “We should hold the president to his word on making a deal for Dreamers and ensure these individuals have a future in America.”

As the Trump administration prepares to take office, Suozzi’s call for bipartisanship underscores a broader debate within the Democratic Party about how to navigate the political landscape under a Republican presidency. His willingness to engage across party lines reflects the sentiments of many Americans who are eager for solutions over gridlock.

“We need to stop standing with the extremes and start working together to get things done,” Suozzi concluded.

Whether Suozzi’s approach will resonate with his party or face resistance remains to be seen, but his message offers a blueprint for lawmakers seeking to bridge the divide in a deeply polarized political environment.
