Federal authorities confirmed Friday that a 25-year-old Indian national, Sukhdev Singh, is in custody following a collision in Indianapolis that left an American citizen fighting for their life. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that Singh, who was illegally present in the United States, was operating a semi-truck using a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the state of New York.

The incident occurred on March 6, 2026, around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of E Raymond Street and I-65. Indiana State Police arrived at the scene to find a pedestrian had been struck by the heavy vehicle. After identifying Singh and determining his immigration status, state troopers contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Agents arrived that evening to take Singh into federal custody, where he currently remains pending the outcome of his immigration proceedings. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and is listed in critical condition.

According to DHS records, Singh received a non-domiciled CDL from New York on January 2, 2025. The case has reignited a fierce debate over state-level licensing policies. Deputy Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis voiced criticism regarding the oversight of heavy machinery on U.S. roads.

“It is common sense: illegal aliens should not be operating 18-wheelers on American highways,” Bis stated. “It is incredibly dangerous for illegal aliens, who often don’t know our traffic laws or even English, to be operating 18-wheelers on America’s roads. Sanctuary governors like Kathy Hochul must stop giving illegal aliens driver’s licenses before even more Americans get injured or killed.”

This is not an isolated event for federal investigators.

This past October, DHS officials arrested another Indian national, Anmol Anmol, who had also secured a New York CDL despite having entered the country illegally in 2023. ICE records show Anmol was released into the interior by the Biden administration before being placed in removal proceedings following his arrest.

DHS maintains that its law enforcement divisions are working daily to prevent such incidents. In the wake of the Indianapolis crash, the agency reminded the public that the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) Office is available to provide support to those affected by similar tragedies.
