Republican U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik officially announced her campaign for Governor of New York on Friday, launching a high-profile challenge against incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.
In a social media video announcing her run, Stefanik, who represents a deep-red congressional district in upstate New York, leveled heavy criticism at the current administration, calling Gov. Hochul “the worst governor in America” and slamming New York as “the most unaffordable state in the nation.”
Stefanik brings solid name recognition and deep ties to the White House, having been a staunch ally of the Republican president since transforming her political persona from a moderate into an outspoken MAGA disciple. Last year, the President had nominated her for the role of U.N. Ambassador before rescinding the offer due to concerns over tight House margins.
Though the Republican primary field remains uncertain for the 2026 race, any Republican faces long odds in the heavily Democratic state. The last Republican governor, George Pataki, left office two decades ago. However, the 2022 race saw former Congressman Lee Zeldin, now head of the EPA, come within striking distance of unseating Hochul.
Stefanik’s national profile recently received a major boost after her aggressive questioning of university presidents over antisemitism on their campuses led to two resignations and earned her praise from the Republican president.
