New York Rep. Lawler Hails “Incredible” Iran Rescue As War Powers Act Debate Heats Up

A rescue mission in Iran has successfully recovered the second pilot of a downed U.S. F-15 fighter jet, marking a significant victory for American Special Forces. Appearing on “Meet the Press” this Easter Sunday, New York Rep. Mike Lawler praised the rescue as a testament to the bravery of the armed forces and a win for the country.

The operation comes amid a broader military campaign that Lawler described as highly effective. Over the last five weeks, U.S. and Israeli forces have reportedly eliminated much of the IRGC leadership and dismantled Iran’s air defenses, naval fleet, and ballistic missile programs.

Lawler argued these aggressive measures were necessary to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions, noting that previous efforts to curb the regime had often been “hollow and empty words.”

Addressing the use of ground troops during the rescue, Lawler commended the administration’s decisive action. While he suggested that any further ground presence should be limited to securing enriched uranium, he remained firm that the current operations are legally sound.

Lawler pointed out that the administration complied with the War Powers Act by notifying Congress within 48 hours and is operating within the allowed 60-to-90-day window.

“For Tim Kaine or any other Democrat to say this is illegal, especially after so many Democrats… supported Barack Obama’s seven-month war in Libya, is just hypocritical at best,” Lawler said, dismissing claims of executive overreach.

While some colleagues, including Senator John Curtis (R-UT), have raised concerns about the need for a formal declaration of war, Lawler noted that such declarations have not been used since World War II. He did concede that if the mission extends beyond the 90-day legal limit, Congress would need to step in and take necessary action.

When asked by host Kristen Welker about future military spending, Lawler pledged his full support for the troops. He emphasized that the legislative and appropriations process would continue to ensure the military remains fully equipped.

“I’m a yes for funding our military and ensuring they have the capabilities to perform their operations,” Lawler stated, signaling a commitment to maintaining the current momentum against the Iranian threat.
