A shocking murder investigation has stunned the tight-knit community of Sun City after an 82-year-old woman, whom friends described as the “nicest person in Sun City,” was charged with the murder of her husband at a coastal South Carolina nursing home.
Harriet Kay Recker, 82, is accused of shooting and killing her 81-year-old husband, Dennis Recker, on September 12 at the Preston Health Center on Hilton Head Island.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says the crime was premeditated, citing evidence including notes found on her person and at her home.
A Planned Shooting?
Just a day before the shooting, Dennis Recker had been admitted to the facility for health issues requiring additional care. The tragedy unfolded moments after a neighbor, who had driven the couple to the center, briefly left the room. Upon hearing a loud noise and rushing back, the neighbor found Harriet Recker holding a gun, and Dennis Recker suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Despite life-saving efforts, Dennis Recker died from his injuries.
According to WTOC, one witness reported the victim’s final, stunned words: “She shot me.”
Harriet Recker reportedly told investigators, “He was a good man,” and described the incident as “a sad situation.”
However, investigators discovered notes detailing her declining health and emotional struggles. One note, read in court, spoke of her overwhelming distress: “To you all, this has just been too much for me… We can’t have a life without someone, and that someone can’t be me, as I am not strong enough or smart enough to do all this.”
Community Stunned
The news has sent shockwaves through the Sun City community, where the couple was well-known. Those who knew Harriet Recker expressed disbelief at the allegations.
“When I saw her picture, I was dumbfounded, like there is no way that this woman did what they are saying she did,” said Ted Dwemoh, who provided pest control services for the couple. He called Recker the “nicest person in Sun City,” recalling her warm demeanor and generosity, according to WTOC.

Family members told deputies they had no knowledge of Recker ever owning or carrying a gun. Harriet Recker was booked into the Beaufort County Jail and is being held without bond on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities try to piece together what led the “nicest person in Sun City” to this shocking end.
