Nick Reiner entered a plea of not guilty Monday to two counts of first-degree murder. The 32-year-old stands accused in the stabbing deaths of his parents, acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner. Standing behind a glass partition in a secure custody area, the younger Reiner appeared with a shaved head and standard brown jail attire, a notable departure from the suicide prevention smock he wore during his initial court appearance back in December.

The proceedings were brief and procedural. Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene entered the plea on Reiner’s behalf, while the defendant spoke only once to answer “yes” to a direct question from the judge. Reiner, the third of Rob Reiner’s four children, has remained in custody without bail since his arrest on December 14.

That morning, authorities discovered the bodies of the 78-year-old director and his 70-year-old wife in their Brentwood home. Initial findings from the LA County Medical Examiner confirmed the couple died from “multiple sharp force injuries,” though a court order has kept further details of the autopsies and any potential motives under seal.

The transition to a public defender marks a shift in Reiner’s legal representation. His former attorney, the high-profile private lawyer Alan Jackson, stepped down in January citing ethical constraints and circumstances beyond his control.

Before his departure, Jackson vocally defended his former client to the press, insisting that independent investigations would prove Nick Reiner is not guilty under California law. It remains unclear who originally funded Jackson’s private defense, as defendants typically only utilize public defenders when they lack the financial means for private counsel.

Inside the courtroom, Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian informed the court that the prosecution is still waiting for the finalized autopsy reports to be completed. However, Balian noted that all other gathered evidence has been shared with the defense team. While the charges against Nick Reiner make him eligible for the death penalty, prosecutors stated they have not yet reached a decision on whether they will pursue that sentence.

The deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner have sent ripples through the film community, where Rob was a towering figure for decades.

Known for directing a string of hits including “Stand By Me” and “When Harry Met Sally…,” Reiner met Michele during the production of the latter. They had been married for 36 years at the time of their deaths. For now, the case moves toward a preliminary hearing as both sides continue to review the evidence in a tragedy that has captivated and saddened the public.
