TAMPA, Fla. – A massive two-alarm fire tore through a Public Storage facility in Tampa on Friday night, leaving one person dead and a firefighter injured.
The emergency began at 8:38 PM when dispatchers were flooded with 911 calls reporting heavy smoke and flames at 6940 N. 56th Street.
When Hillsborough County Fire Rescue teams first arrived on the scene, they found the building heavily engulfed. Firefighters initially rushed inside to battle the blaze from the inside, but they were quickly forced back by the fire’s sheer intensity.
As conditions deteriorated, commanders made the call to shift to a “defensive operation.” This move saw crews pull back and deploy master streams—high-capacity water nozzles—to soak the structure from the outside and prevent the fire from jumping to neighboring properties.

A second alarm was triggered shortly after, calling in additional personnel and equipment to help manage the incident’s scale.
It took teams roughly two hours to finally bring the situation under control. Amid the smoke and debris, officials confirmed that one civilian was killed in the fire.
Their identity has not yet been released. One firefighter also suffered a minor injury while working the scene; they were treated by medical staff on-site and did not need to be taken to a hospital.
While the flames are out, the investigation is just beginning. Fire marshals are currently on the scene working to determine what sparked the blaze at the facility.
No further details regarding the extent of the property damage or the cause of the fire have been provided at this time.
