A night of celebration turned into a scene of panic early Sunday morning when gunfire broke out on Kirkwood Avenue, leaving at least nine people injured following Indiana University’s annual Little 500 bicycle race.
The Bloomington Police Department responded to reports of shots fired just before 12:30 a.m. on April 26, arriving to find a crowd scattered and multiple victims wounded.
The violence occurred during an outdoor gathering after the “Little Five” festivities at Bill Armstrong Stadium had concluded. In the immediate aftermath, Indiana University issued an emergency alert to students via social media, warning them to “take safe shelter” and “avoid the area” while police secured the scene.
First responders found a chaotic situation involving several wounded individuals. Five victims were transported to local hospitals by ambulance, while one was taken in a police squad car and two others were driven in personal vehicles. A ninth person was later located at a nearby gas station and transported for medical treatment with injuries believed to be linked to the shooting.

“It is not currently known how many suffered direct gunshot wounds or if their injuries were a result of being struck by bullet fragments,” the Bloomington Police Department stated in an official news release.
The investigation is ongoing, with assistance from the Indiana University Police Department, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Indiana State Police. As of Sunday morning, no suspects have been taken into custody, and authorities have not released descriptions of those involved.
Witnesses at the scene described a sudden escalation of a verbal dispute. Several individuals told reporters that the area was packed with people when a fight broke out between two women.
Police cordoned off Kirkwood Avenue for several hours to collect evidence and interview those who remained at the scene. They are asking anyone with information or video footage of the incident to come forward as they work to identify the shooter.
