A British man is facing up to 30 years in a United States federal prison after a judge found him guilty of traveling across international borders to sexually abuse a child. The conviction of 59-year-old Justin Matthew Ward follows a complex, years-long legal saga involving multiple countries and a determined extradition effort by American authorities.

The case dates back to the early 2000s in Germany, where Ward first met a family whose parents worked for the U.S. Department of State. Evidence presented during a trial in the Southern District of Florida revealed that Ward began abusing one of the family’s children, who was under the age of 12 at the time.

When the family eventually moved to South Florida, the abuse did not end. In February 2004, Ward traveled from abroad to the United States specifically to continue the assaults on the same victim.

Ward’s past eventually caught up with him in his home country. In December 2012, authorities in the United Kingdom arrested him on separate charges involving child molestation and the production of child pornography.

He served an 11-year sentence in the U.K., but his release from British prison did not mean freedom. Instead, he was immediately taken into custody based on an extradition request from the United States. Following a series of legal challenges that lasted several years, Ward was finally flown to Florida in July 2025 to face the American charges.

“Crimes against children are the most vile offenses imaginable,” said U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida. “This defendant crossed international borders to continue abusing a child he had already victimized overseas. After years of legal challenges, he was extradited to the United States to face justice. Let this be clear: distance, time, and geography will not shield child predators. The Southern District of Florida will relentlessly pursue those who exploit children, no matter where they hide and no matter how long it takes.”

U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez presided over the trial and delivered the guilty verdict for traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

Ward remains in federal custody as he awaits his sentencing hearing, which is currently scheduled for April 7. While federal guidelines suggest a significant prison term, the final decision on the length of his sentence will rest with Judge Martinez.
