Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer vetoed a bill passed by the Republican-led Legislature that would have forgiven business

No Stranger To Flouting COVID Lockdown Rules, Michigan Gov. Whitmer Refuses To Let Business Owners Off The Hook

Apparently, Gov. Cruella DeVil has no sense of irony.

In Michigan, Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer vetoed a bill passed by the Republican-led Legislature that would have forgiven business owners slapped with fines for first-time offenses in violating COVID-19 regulations.

Whitmer, in a letter explaining her decision, noted, “Every Michigander has the right to a safe workplace under both state and federal law. Among other requirements, federal law requires our state to maintain workplace standards at least as effective as requirements set forth in the federal Occupational Health and Safety Act.”

“By prohibiting the Michigan Occupational Health and Safety Administration (MIOSHA) from assessing a fine for an employer’s first violation of a COVID-19 emergency standard, HB 4501 would cause Michigan to fall below the minimum standard required by federal law,” she added. “That would have disastrous consequences for our state.”

“When a state fails to maintain the minimum standard, it loses control over enforcement of workplace standards. That would mean higher penalties, an end to voluntary safety outreach services, and the loss of Michigan stakeholder voices in our occupational health and safety program,” she continued. “I will not let that happen.”

As Free Press readers recall, however, Whitmer has a history of violating COVID-19 rules.

As recently as three weeks ago, she was photographed going maskless in an upscale Washington, D.C., bar, where masking was required. She was in D.C. to campaign for failed Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, but then bailed on him.

Whitmer this year also was photographed at a table in a Michigan restaurant with a dozen other people – when she herself had announced rules limiting seating capacity to tables of no more than six. All 13 people at her table were also maskless.

And then Whitmer decried interstate travel as a major COVID threat, especially whipping up fear of Michigan residents who may be returning from Florida.

Yet she left the state to go to Florida to visit her father. That incident occurred after two of her top aides also had left Michigan for Sun Belt vacations.

Breitbart News noted that Whitmer’s veto was a slap at her own party since the bill had passed with “substantial” Democratic support. And it wasn’t like business owners got off completely. The bill required those who received mercy for the fine would still be mandated to take corrective action to fend off future violations.
