HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – An unannounced inspection on June 23, 2026, found the Hernando County Detention Center in full compliance with state regulations, resulting in zero recorded violations.
The surprise evaluation follows a scheduled inspection from earlier this year, which also yielded a perfect compliance record.
The Florida Model Jail Standards outline the minimum legal requirements necessary to safeguard the constitutional rights of incarcerated individuals. State compliance checks are designed to verify that local detention facilities consistently meet or exceed Florida’s strict operational and medical mandates.
An outside inspection team from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office conducted the unannounced review. Investigators examined internal facility policies, evaluated official proofs of compliance, toured the physical building, and conducted interviews with both jail staff and inmates.
The final inspection report officially confirmed that all evaluated sectors met state criteria, with no serious violations observed. Investigators additionally noted that the facility was clean and that the staff demonstrated professional behavior and a clear knowledge of agency policies and procedures.
“Anyone can prepare for an inspection when they know it’s coming,” Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said following the report’s release. “The true measure of a well-run facility is what happens when no one is watching—and that’s exactly what an unannounced inspection reveals. Our detention staff passed with full compliance and zero violations because they operate at this level every single day, not just on inspection day. I’m proud of every member of our detention team for the professionalism and consistency they bring to one of the most demanding jobs in law enforcement.”
Captain Justin Beetz echoed the sheriff’s statement regarding the facility’s day-to-day operations.
“This inspection validates the high standards our staff maintain every day, not just when an inspection is scheduled,” Beetz said. “Achieving full compliance during an unannounced inspection is a direct result of the dedication and pride our employees bring to their work each day.”
