‘Normal Democrats Lose’: Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett Torches Senate Race Playbook

In a move that instantly electrified the 2026 midterm landscape, Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) launched her campaign to unseat longtime Republican Senator John Cornyn.

The outspoken congresswoman dismissed skeptics during an appearance on Meet the Press NOW, arguing that her high-voltage political style is exactly what Democrats need to flip the Lone Star State.

Crockett’s entry sets up a high-stakes Democratic primary against State Representative James Talerico, another rising star who built his reputation battling GOP redistricting maps. But Crockett contends that her internal data paints a clear path to victory.

“Polling… showed that I am absolutely competitive,” Crockett told NBC’s Gabe Gutierrez. She acknowledged her late entry might worry establishment figures but framed her candidacy as a necessary pivot from past failures. When pressed on Senator Cornyn’s recent comments to Semafor—where he called her candidacy a “gift” and labeled her “something else” compared to a “normal Democrat”—Crockett didn’t flinch.

“Considering the fact that normal Democrats have been losing, I think that this is absolutely the fight that we need at this moment,” she retorted.

The Strategy: Banking on Stardom and GOP Infighting

Crockett is betting that her national profile will allow her to bypass the expensive “introduction phase” that typically drains war chests in statewide Texas races.

With a massive social media following and frequent mentions by President Trump—who she notes often uses her as a political foil—Crockett argues she has the name recognition most challengers lack.

She also predicts a bruising Republican primary will work in her favor. Cornyn is currently fending off challenges from the right, including Attorney General Ken Paxton and Rep. Wesley Hunt. Crockett anticipates the GOP incumbents will be “locked into a race most likely until May,” forcing them to burn cash and drift further right, alienating moderates while Democrats consolidate.

Clashing on the Border

The interview also highlighted the sharp policy contrasts defining the race, particularly regarding immigration. Facing questions about the Trump administration’s reported success in lowering border encounter numbers, Crockett conceded the statistics but attacked the methods.

“He has invoked a very inhumane way of carrying out immigration,” Crockett said, criticizing the administration for bypassing Congress and lacking transparency. She called for comprehensive legislative reform rather than executive action, signaling that the border will remain a central flashpoint in her campaign against Cornyn, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

A New Kind of Rivalry

Despite the sharp elbows, Crockett revealed a surprising history of cooperation with Cornyn, citing their past work on fentanyl legislation and food security. She described him as having been a “good partner” and “more like a normal Republican” in previous years, suggesting his current combative stance is a calculation to survive his own primary threats.

As the race heats up, Crockett’s gamble is clear: Texas Democrats have tried the safe route for decades. Now, they might just see what happens when they take the gloves off.
