North Carolina Father Takes Fatal Rounds To Save 8-Month-Old In Driveway Ambush

A late-night homecoming turned into a scene of selfless tragedy in Plymouth, North Carolina, early Thursday morning. At approximately 1:34 a.m. on April 2, 2026, the quiet of the 100 block of Latham Avenue was shattered by a barrage of gunfire that left one man dead and another seriously wounded.

Officers arriving at the scene discovered 36-year-old Devonelle Brimage slumped inside a vehicle parked in a residential driveway.

He was unresponsive, suffering from several gunshot wounds, and was pronounced dead where he sat. However, investigators soon realized the final act of Brimage’s life was one of desperate protection.

Police confirmed in a social media post that Brimage was shielding an 8-month-old infant when the shots rang out. Because Brimage placed his own body between the shooter and the child, the infant survived the violence.

While the baby sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a local hospital, officials have since confirmed the child was treated and released.

Brimage wasn’t the only adult in the crossfire. In the back seat, officers found 38-year-old Avione Linquad Webb also suffering from gunshot wounds. Webb was stabilized at a local medical facility before being transferred for more specialized care. His current medical status remains undisclosed to the public.

No suspect information has been released, and the motive for the shooting remains unclear.

Authorities are pleading with the public for help, asking anyone who may have seen something or heard anything unusual on Latham Avenue to contact the Plymouth Police Department at (252) 793-4680.
