A North Carolina mother remains behind bars without bond following a high-speed crash earlier this month that claimed the lives of her three young children.
Megan Scott, 31, faces three felony counts of involuntary manslaughter alongside a string of traffic, assault, and domestic violence charges. According to police investigators, Scott was driving at speeds reaching 111 mph on June 3 around 11 p.m. when her vehicle crashed on Cedar Creek Road, according to multiple local media outlets.
The investigation revealed that Scott was actively speeding away from a police traffic stop at the time of the wreck. Two of her children were ejected from the vehicle during the impact. Investigators noted that the children were required to be in car seats but were not safely secured inside the vehicle. A third child was also inside the car. Two of the boys died at the scene of the crash, while the third brother passed away later after being rushed to a local hospital.
Family members have identified the three brothers as Jae’ Coda Thomas, 3, Ju’ Mari Thomas, 6, and Jack Thomas, 8. A GoFundMe campaign has since been established by the family to help cover their funeral expenses.
Court documents show that the fatal crash followed a sequence of legal troubles for Scott beginning the day prior. On June 2, Scott was cited by police for driving without a license or insurance, as well as operating a vehicle with an expired registration.
The situation escalated the following day, June 3, when officers responded to an afternoon domestic dispute. An arrest affidavit details that Scott bit a man’s arm before hitting him with a car and fleeing the scene. Later that evening, officers located Scott and initiated a traffic stop on Cedar Creek Road to serve a warrant tied to that domestic incident.
When officers instructed Scott to step out of the vehicle, police say she put the car in drive and fled, striking two Fayetteville police officers in the process. Minutes later, the vehicle crashed at 111 mph.
Scott is currently booked at the Cumberland County Detention Center. In blocking her bail, the official court release order states that “the defendant has a history of assault – causing serious bodily injury, theft, carrying weapons (in Texas), and she is a flight risk.”
In addition to the three manslaughter charges, Scott is charged with reckless driving to endanger, speeding, driving while her license was revoked, hit-and-run, failure to maintain lane control, and failing to wear a seat belt. She also faces three counts of failure to secure a passenger under 16, domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon for striking her partner, and two counts of assault on an officer.
