A North Carolina jury has convicted 33-year-old Jeanie Kassandra Ditty of first-degree murder and child abuse in the 2015 death of her 2-year-old daughter, Macy Grace Ditty.
Following less than three hours of deliberation in a Fayetteville courtroom last Thursday, a judge sentenced Ditty to life in prison without parole, plus an additional 157 to 201 months.
The conviction follows an earlier 2020 trial that ended in a hung jury, split 10-2 in favor of guilt. In the retrial, 16 witnesses testified across several weeks before the jury delivered its unanimous verdict.
Medical personnel first encountered Macy Grace in December 2015, just 10 days shy of her third birthday. According to prosecutors, hospital staff observed “extensive bruising and trauma indicative of severe physical abuse.” Further examinations confirmed that the child had sustained “at least 40 separate physical blows.”
“A CT scan revealed non-survivable brain injuries sustained within the prior 8 to 24 hours — a period during which [her mom] was the sole caregiver with access to the child,” prosecutors stated. Macy died from her injuries two days after admission.
Between her daughter’s death and her initial arrest, Ditty, then a soldier stationed at Fort Bragg, contacted Pennsylvania photographer Sunny Jo to request composite memorial portraits. Jo created composite images that superimposed a translucent figure of the child alongside Ditty in various settings, including a cemetery, a picnic blanket, and an outdoor memorial.
Jo waived the typical $300 to $500 fee for the service. “She told me her daughter had passed away by choking on a banana, and that choking gave her seizures which made her lose oxygen to the brain and then she passed away,” Jo told reporters, adding, “She offered to pay, and honestly, I couldn’t do it. It was a gift for what I thought was a grieving mother at the time.”
Jo later characterized taking the assignment as the “biggest mistake” of his career, though he noted it helped give the child “a voice.”
Separately, while on pretrial release awaiting her second murder trial, Ditty was arrested on May 21, 2026, by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators with the Special Victims Unit initiated that inquiry on March 23, 2026, after receiving reports from county social services regarding another 2-year-old child who sustained facial injuries to the nose and eye area.
Following consultation with the Onslow County District Attorney’s Office, authorities charged Ditty with one count of felony child abuse.
