A North Carolina woman faces multiple felony charges following an investigation into the severe injury of an infant in her care, authorities said.
The Smithfield Police Department launched an investigation after officials at Wake Medical Center reported that an infant was brought to the hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Investigators subsequently executed a search warrant at a residence located at 205 Cloverdale Drive in Smithfield. Following the search and interviews conducted during the inquiry, police established probable cause to arrest 25-year-old Brooke Ashley Reiner.
Reiner was brought before a magistrate and formally charged with two counts of intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury and one count of providing child care while unlicensed resulting in serious injury to a child.
A magistrate issued Reiner a $5,000,000 secured bond. As of the latest report, the infant remains in serious condition at Wake Medical Center.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident alongside the operation of Sunrise to Sunset Home Child Care, which was based at the Cloverdale Drive location.
