TAMPA, Fla. – Two Tampa Police officers narrowly avoided injury this morning after a suspect fired upon them during an altercation at an apartment complex. The suspect, 23-year-old Matthew Fowler, is now in custody.
The incident occurred just after 10:00 a.m. at the Azula North Apartments on E. Busch Blvd. A detective and a corporal, with 21 and 9 years of service respectively, were conducting follow-up investigations on an unrelated robbery when they observed Fowler attempting to enter vehicles and apartment doors.

While attempting to identify Fowler, a struggle ensued, and he drew a Glock 9mm handgun with an extended magazine, firing at the officers. Fortunately, neither officer was struck. One officer returned fire, but Fowler fled the scene.
A perimeter was quickly established, and Fowler was apprehended a short time later near N. 50th St. and Temple Heights Rd. His firearm was recovered from a nearby dumpster.
Fowler, a convicted felon with a violent criminal history, faces charges related to burglary and two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.

“Every officer who wears the badge understands the inherent dangers of this profession, yet they selflessly answer the call to protect our community,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “These officers, already engaged in an active investigation, demonstrated their dedication by proactively addressing criminal activity. Their actions, which placed them directly in harm’s way, undoubtedly contributed to the safety of our residents. We are incredibly grateful that our officers were not injured, and we are now focused on ensuring justice is served.”
The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the officer-involved shooting, as per Tampa Police Department policy.

During an attempt to apprehend a suspect, the suspect fired shots at officers. Officers returned fire, and the suspect was taken into custody shortly after.

No injuries were reported to any officers or the suspect during the incident.
