U.S. Rep. Max Miller, R-Ohio, denied abuse allegations made by his ex-wife during a livestream on X Sunday morning and insisted he will remain in his re-election campaign, drawing a swift public response from his former father-in-law, Sen. Bernie Moreno, who urged Miller to step down from Congress.
Miller spoke in front of family photos during his statement addressing the claims from his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. Miller stated that his former spouse has documented mental health circumstances that may have led to her allegations following their public divorce.
“They frame me as an abuser,” Miller said, adding that there is “no evidence” against him.
“No court or agency has even substantiated any allegation against me,” Miller said. “Every single one of these allegations were already investigated.”
Miller, a former White House adviser during Donald Trump’s first presidency, said he released documents through Dropbox that he contends disprove the accusations.
“I have nothing to hide,” Miller said. “I’m not getting out of this race, and I’m winning in November.”
Later Sunday morning, Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, released a statement on X criticizing Miller and calling for him to leave office.
“As a father and husband, I can tell you the last two years have been pure hell for my wife Bridget, our daughter Emily, me, and our entire family in the aftermath of Emily’s divorce,” Moreno wrote. “It has been horrific to watch this play out in full public view, all while knowing an innocent two-year-old girl is caught in the middle. Our priority has always been protecting our daughter and our granddaughter. Out of concern for the safety of my family, I hoped to keep this matter private but Max Miller’s increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior has made that impossible.”
Moreno stated that Miller poses a threat to his family and lacks the character required for public office.
“As he has admitted privately, Max Miller needs serious psychological help,” Moreno said. “He is a danger to my daughter, and I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter. If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them. He should not serve in the House of Representatives. I believe Max Miller needs to seek professional help to end the clear pattern of abuse he has left in his wake. I believe he should not be free to continue endangering others until he does.”
Moreno concluded his post by adding, “I ran for office because I wanted to make a difference for the country that gave me every opportunity to succeed, and to leave this nation better for my children and grandchildren. That sacrifice has been especially hard on my wife Bridget, whose big heart and steady support have never wavered. I owe it to her, to Emily, and to my granddaughter to speak the truth now.”
The escalating back-and-forth comes as Democrats look for opportunities to win control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Miller represents a northeast Ohio congressional seat that he won two years ago with roughly 51% of the vote.
Over the past week, Democrats called on Miller to resign, requested a congressional ethics investigation, and suggested directing additional campaign support toward his Democratic challenger, union ironworker Brian Poindexter.
Miller continues to deny all allegations of abuse and has filed defamation lawsuits against his ex-wife and a second accuser.
