Oil Prices Explode To Four-Year High As Hormuz Blockade Holds Firm

Global energy markets experienced a massive jolt early Thursday as Brent crude spiked to $126.41 a barrel. The surge marks the highest price for the international benchmark since 2022, fueled by the ongoing military standoff in the Middle East.

While the price later retreated to around $110, the morning’s peak highlighted the extreme volatility gripping the market since the start of “Operation Epic Fury.”

Current energy costs have climbed significantly from the $73-per-barrel average seen before the conflict began. This shift has hit American consumers directly at the pump, as U.S. gasoline prices typically track the Brent benchmark.

Historically, every $10 increase in a barrel of Brent results in a roughly 24-cent jump per gallon of gas. National averages have soared from $2.80 to $4.30 per gallon since Iran shuttered the Strait of Hormuz in response to U.S. military strikes.

The $126.41 figure represents the highest spot price—the cost for immediate delivery—since March 2022, when Brent reached $139.18 following the invasion of Ukraine.

The market tension follows a breakdown in high-level diplomacy. Vice President JD Vance recently returned from Islamabad, Pakistan, where he led a delegation in face-to-face negotiations with Iranian leadership that began April 11. The talks ended without a resolution.

“I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America,” Vance stated following the conclusion of the meetings.

In the wake of the failed negotiations, President Donald Trump escalated the U.S. response by initiating a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz on April 12. The move effectively halted all unapproved maritime traffic through the vital chokepoint.

The President detailed the enforcement of the blockade in a post on Truth Social, writing: “I have also instructed our Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran. No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.”

He added a direct warning to Iranian forces in the region: “Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL! Iran knows, better than anyone, how to END this situation which has already devastated their Country.”
