MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A heated domestic dispute on U.S. 1 ended with a firearm tossed into the brush and an Okeechobee man behind bars on Saturday afternoon. Charles Durand Wilkinson, 77, was arrested on March 28, 2026, after allegedly pulling a revolver on a woman as they drove through the Florida Keys.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Mile Marker 38 at approximately 2:50 p.m. to investigate reports of a domestic incident involving a weapon.

The victim, who was driving the vehicle, told authorities that Wilkinson retrieved a revolver and told her, “I ought to shoot you.”

In the middle of the confrontation, the woman managed to pull the car over, wrestle the handgun away from Wilkinson, and hurl it into the nearby bushes. Deputies later recovered the loaded firearm from the vegetation.

Despite the proximity of the weapon, no serious injuries were reported. Wilkinson was taken into custody and faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

He was transported to a local jail for processing following the roadside investigation.
