Cross-State Custody: Oklahoma Mom Faces Florida Murder Rap in Child’s Drowning
A tragic incident has led to the arrest of an Oklahoma pediatrician, Dr. Neha Gupta, in connection with the drowning death of her 4-year-old daughter in a residential pool in El Portal.
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) Homicide Bureau detectives apprehended Dr. Gupta in Oklahoma and are now awaiting extradition to Miami-Dade County, where she will face charges of first-degree murder.

The investigation began on June 27, when officers from the Village of El Portal Police Department responded to an overnight 9-1-1 call reporting a drowning child in a residential pool. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue swiftly transported the unresponsive child to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
Preliminary findings by investigators reveal that Dr. Neha Gupta and her daughter had traveled from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and were residing at a short-term rental property at the time of the incident.
The 9-1-1 call was received during the overnight hours, stating the child was drowning in the pool.
However, a critical development in the case emerged from the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy performed on June 29 reportedly revealed no water in the victim’s lungs or stomach, strongly suggesting she did not drown. Furthermore, there were allegedly lacerations in the child’s mouth and bruises inside her cheeks.

According to local news outlet WPLG, preliminary findings indicate the child’s injuries were consistent with “smothering,” and she likely died before being placed in the pool. The news source, citing the affidavit, alleges that Gupta “attempted to conceal the killing of the deceased victim by staging an accidental drowning within the swimming pool of a rental property.”
Adding another layer to the tragic case, Gupta and her ex-husband, Dr. Saurabh Talathi, allegedly shared custody of the young girl and were involved in an ongoing custody battle at the time of her death. Dr. Talathi reportedly had no knowledge that Gupta had taken their daughter out of Oklahoma.
Following an extensive investigation and consultation with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, detectives secured an arrest warrant for Dr. Neha Gupta. They subsequently traveled to Oklahoma City, where, with the assistance of the Oklahoma City Police Department’s Homicide Unit and the United States Marshals Service, they successfully located and took her into custody.
