On the Brink: Missiles Rain On Kyiv As Peace Deal Inches Closer

The war in Ukraine has reached a chaotic split-screen moment. Just as Kyiv signaled on Tuesday that it supports the framework of a pending peace deal, a fresh barrage of Russian missiles slammed into the capital, killing at least seven people.

The contrast highlights the fragile nature of the current diplomatic push. While officials suggest an agreement to end the war could be just “days away,” the fighting on the ground remains as deadly as ever.

Diplomacy in High Gear

The Trump administration is driving an intense effort to close the deal. Following weekend talks in Geneva and a discreet meeting between U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and Russian officials in Abu Dhabi, the framework is reportedly in place.

However, the final hurdles are significant. Ukraine has agreed to the broad strokes of the plan but insists that specific “sensitive issues” must be resolved directly between President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Washington remains outwardly confident. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the past week’s developments as “tremendous progress,” noting that while delicate details remain, they are “not insurmountable.” This echoes comments from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who suggested that the parties simply need more time to finalize the text.

Moscow’s Warning

Despite the momentum, the Kremlin has made it clear that their cooperation is conditional. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that Moscow could still reject an amended peace plan if the terms drift too far from the understanding reached during the recent U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska.

Russia insists that any final agreement must reflect its strategic objectives, signaling that the window for compromise is narrow.

Violence on the Edge of NATO

While negotiators haggled over terms in safe rooms, the war’s reality continued unabated. The overnight strikes on Kyiv served as a brutal reminder of the stakes.

The violence also threatened to spill beyond Ukraine’s borders. Romania was forced to scramble NATO fighter jets after at least one Russian drone reportedly entered its airspace, raising tensions on the alliance’s eastern flank just as peace talks enter their most critical phase.
