Two Florida residents wanted in connection with the death of their infant have been apprehended in North Carolina, local authorities announced.
Leon Alejandro, Jr., 21, and Samantha Angeline Feliz, 20, both of Hollywood, Florida, were taken into custody on fugitive of justice warrants issued out of Broward County.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office reported that the couple faces multiple charges, including aggravated manslaughter of a child, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, failing to report a death to the medical examiner’s office, providing false information concerning a missing child, and giving false reports to law enforcement during an investigation.
According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, the investigation began in early 2025. Investigators believe Feliz gave birth to the baby between Dec. 6, 2024, and Jan. 5, 2025, in an un-concealed birth that occurred outside of a hospital setting.
Authorities said the infant vanished after its first month of life.
“During the child’s first month of life, other family members saw the couple with the baby,” the press release states. “After that, the baby was never seen again, and both parents denied that the child was theirs, claiming it was a prank.”
Despite a lack of official birth or medical records, investigators formally charged Alejandro and Feliz on the premise that the child was born and later died.
Following the issuance of arrest warrants, the U.S. Marshals Service requested assistance from North Carolina law enforcement to locate the pair. Authorities located and arrested Alejandro and Feliz at a residence on Ledbetter Road in Rockingham, North Carolina, which belongs to a relative of Alejandro.
Law enforcement officials have not yet disclosed the baby’s exact age at the time of death or details regarding the cause of death.
“This is a prime example of agencies nationwide collaborating to uphold justice,” Richmond County Sheriff Mark B. Gulledge said in a statement.
Alejandro and Feliz are currently held without bond at the Richmond County Jail pending extradition to Florida.
