ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A two-vehicle collision at a local intersection left one driver dead and another injured early Thursday morning.
The crash happened at 1:37 a.m. at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and Lafayette Street North. Police reports indicate that a pick-up truck was traveling eastbound on 5th Avenue North when it crossed over the center line into the westbound lane, colliding head-on with an oncoming van.
The driver of the pick-up truck, identified as 72-year-old Charles Peter Caravana, died from his injuries at the scene of the crash. Officials confirmed that his next of kin have been notified.
The driver of the van, a 67-year-old woman, survived the impact. First responders transported her to Orlando Bayfront Hospital, where medical staff listed her in stable condition.
Authorities have not released details regarding what caused the pick-up truck to veer into oncoming traffic. The investigation into the exact cause of the crash remains active and ongoing.
