PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – A Palm Harbor man is facing serious charges after hitting two road workers with his SUV and fleeing the scene.

68-year-old Charles Edward Kunath was driving southbound on Lake St. George Drive, north of Tampa Road, when he encountered a flooded and partially washed-out roadway.

Despite construction barricades, vehicles, and workers signaling him to stop, Kunath drove around them, striking two Pinellas County workers.

Both workers, a 49-year-old from Pinellas Park and a 49-year-old from Clearwater, sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

Kunath fled the scene after the collision but was later apprehended by Florida Highway Patrol Troopers at his residence.

He has been charged with attempted vehicular homicide, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of a crash with injuries, reckless driving involving serious injury, and several traffic violations. Kunath is currently being held in the Pinellas County Jail.
