Pasco County Library Team Receives Big Kudos From BOCC

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. – The Pasco County Library Cooperative was congratulated Tuesday for using grant funds to provide books by mail to home-bound residents and to enhance the Mobile Maker Space program (a free, mobile crew that focuses on crafts and activities for kids in grades 2-5 living in the 34610 zip code).

Commissioner Mike Moore thanked Cathy Pearson, Assistant County Administrator Public Services, and the library team for not only obtaining more than $70,000 in grants which save tax-payer funds but for the team’s efforts to reach those in need.

Both the books-by-mail and the Mobile MakerSpace programs are intended to help educate, promote reading, especially for those home-bound, as well as teach skills such as woodworking to children.

On Monday, Pasco Libraries announced NASA’s ‘Plant the Moon’ Challenge at the Hugh Embry Library in Dade City.

The challenge was issued by the Institute of Competition Scientists in collaboration with the University of Central Florida’s Center for Lunar and Asteroid Surface Science (CLASS) Exolith Lab, which, in turn, provided lunar soil simulant to our team to conduct the experiment.

“We are so excited for this unique opportunity,” says Hugh Embry Library Associate Sarah Pass.  “Our team, the MoonRakers, is attempting to find ways to grow plants effectively in a simulated moon base environment.  We hope our customers will enjoy this experience as much as we are.”

Everyone is welcome to stop by and see the plants growing in the center of the library.  You can also track the plants’ progress on Hugh Embry Library’s Facebook page.
