PASCO COUNTY, Fla. – Drivers heading through southern Pasco County this weekend need to rethink their routes. Starting at 8 p.m. this Friday, March 6, a significant stretch of US 98 will be completely shut down to through traffic. The closure will remain in effect until 6 a.m. on Monday, March 9, as construction crews work 24/7 to tackle a major infrastructure project.

The work zone spans the area between CR 54 at the Polk-Pasco county line and Old Lakeland Highway.

According to project officials, the around-the-clock schedule is necessary to install drainage pipes deep beneath the road surface and complete essential pavement repairs before the Monday morning commute.

If you live or work within the construction zone, you will still be able to get to your property, though the road is split into two distinct access points.

Those with properties between Old Lakeland Highway and 8933 U.S. Highway 98 (Zone 1) must enter and exit from the north via Old Lakeland Highway. Meanwhile, anyone located between CR 54 and 8551 U.S. Highway 98 (Zone 2) will have to use the southern entrance at CR 54.

For everyone else, the road is a no-go.

A 7.9-mile detour has been established using CR 54 and Old Lakeland Highway to guide drivers around the closure. Local authorities are urging motorists to plan for delays and add extra travel time to their weekend schedules to account for the detour traffic.
