PASCO COUNTY, Fla. – As New Year’s Eve approaches, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office is sharing important safety reminders to help residents celebrate responsibly and ensure a safe start to 2025.

Don’t Drink and Drive

With December being Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness Month, the Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the dangers of impaired driving.

If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a sober driver in advance or arrange for alternative transportation such as a taxi, rideshare service, or public transportation. Remember that even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgment and reaction time.

Fireworks Safety

While fireworks can be a fun way to celebrate, they can also be dangerous if not handled properly. The Sheriff’s Office recommends attending public fireworks displays instead of using fireworks at home. If you do use fireworks, follow these safety tips:

  • Check local regulations before purchasing or using fireworks.
  • Ignite fireworks in a large, open space away from buildings, people, and flammable materials.
  • Light fireworks one at a time and maintain a safe distance.
  • Never allow children to handle fireworks.
  • Keep a water source nearby to extinguish any accidental fires.
  • Douse used fireworks with water before discarding them.

Avoid Celebratory Gunfire

Firing guns into the air is illegal and extremely dangerous. Bullets can travel long distances and cause serious injuries or even death when they fall back to the ground.

Protect Your Pets

Loud noises from fireworks and celebrations can frighten pets, causing them to run away or become injured. Keep pets indoors, provide a safe space for them to hide, and ensure they have updated identification tags.

Drive Defensively

With increased traffic on the roads during the holiday season, it’s important to drive defensively and be patient. Obey traffic laws, maintain a safe speed, and avoid distractions while driving.

Secure Your Vehicle

Remember to lock your car doors to prevent theft and burglaries.

By following these safety tips and celebrating responsibly, Pasco County residents can ensure a happy and safe New Year’s Eve for themselves and their community.
