A 33-year-old Michigan man is in custody following a bizarre and dangerous incident where he allegedly stole an ambulance with a paramedic and a patient still inside.
Police Chief Erick Zinser confirmed that Changlin Li, 33, of Novi, faces a slew of charges, including carjacking, after allegedly taking the Medstar ambulance while he was being treated for a separate crash on Friday, October 24.
The chaotic chase saw the stolen vehicle hit speeds of 70 miles per hour through a construction zone before it ended in a second crash in Northville Township. In addition to the theft, Li allegedly struggled with officers, attempting to disarm one multiple times—once at the crash scene and again at the hospital.
Remarkably, all those involved—the paramedic, the original patient, the patient in the struck vehicle, and the driver—suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The ambulance, however, was declared a total loss.
Li was arraigned on Saturday, October 25, and is also charged with fleeing and eluding, assaulting/resisting/obstructing police, disarming a firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon. His next court date is scheduled for November 5.
