ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. – Zephyrhills commuters might need to pack a little extra patience starting next week. A significant renovation project is descending on County Road 54, bringing with it the inevitable sea of orange barrels but promising a much smoother drive by summer.

Beginning Monday, January 5, 2026, crews will kick off a $2.3 million effort to resurface a key 1.3-mile stretch of the corridor, locally known as Pure Water Way or 5th Avenue. The work zone spans from just west of Flint Drive east to US 301 (Gall Blvd.).

While fresh asphalt is the main attraction, the project involves a comprehensive overhaul of the roadway’s safety features. According to project details, the scope of work includes upgrading and replacing guardrails, repairing sidewalks, installing new signage, and laying down fresh pavement markings.

Drivers should prepare for immediate changes to their morning routine. Lane closures and flagging operations are scheduled to run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Monday, January 5, through Friday, January 9.

Looking ahead, officials indicate that traffic shifts won’t be limited to the first week. Motorists can expect periodic flagging operations during both day and night hours throughout the project’s duration. If the schedule holds, the upgrades are expected to be completed in the summer of 2026.
