Paws And Patrols: Hillsborough County Firefighters, Deputies Team Up To Save Shelter Dogs

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – This Saturday, some of Hillsborough County’s toughest first responders are softening up for a good cause. Firefighters and sheriff’s deputies are joining forces with the Pet Resource Center for the first-ever “Heroes and Hounds” event, a community gathering aimed at clearing out local animal shelters.

Starting at 10 a.m. on May 9, Riverview’s Fire Station 46 will transform into a hub of activity. While the main goal is to find forever homes for adoptable dogs, the day is packed with demonstrations designed to show off the skills of the county’s four-legged professionals.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit will be on hand to showcase their tactical work, and the State Fire Marshal’s office will lead an arson search demonstration to show how dogs sniff out danger.

For those more interested in the gear than the pups, Hillsborough fire trucks will be on full display for tours. Firefighters will also be handing out fire safety tips to families.

“The goal of the first Heroes and Hounds event is to give residents an opportunity to spark a lifelong bond with an adoptable dog, all while meeting the heroes who keep you and your furry companions safe,” officials stated in a release regarding the event.

The atmosphere promises to be more like a neighborhood block party than a formal department briefing. Firefighters from HCFR Local 2294 are firing up the grill to serve free hot dogs to visitors, and the sheriff’s office is bringing along its community ice cream truck to help beat the Florida heat.

The Pet Resource Center, which is organizing the adoptions, remains the only open-admissions shelter in the county. This means they take in every animal that comes to their door, regardless of breed, age, or health, making events like this critical for managing the local pet population.

The event runs until 2 p.m. at 10775 Rhodine Rd. Residents who can’t make it to the station but are looking for a new pet can view all currently adoptable animals online at the county’s website.
