TAMPA, Fla. – A Saturday night traffic crash involving a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy has turned fatal. A pedestrian who was struck by an agency vehicle has died from his injuries, officials confirmed Sunday afternoon.
The collision happened at roughly 10:20 p.m. on June 20, 2026, near the intersection of West Hillsborough Avenue and Ambassador Drive. Deputy Jonathan Kennon, 35, was driving eastbound in the center lane of West Hillsborough Avenue in an unmarked 2024 Chevrolet Silverado when his vehicle struck a pedestrian. According to investigators, the pedestrian was crossing the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk at the time of the impact.
Immediately following the crash, Deputy Kennon pulled over and rendered medical aid to the man until emergency medical services arrived.
The pedestrian, identified as 27-year-old Dudane Anderson III, was rushed by paramedics to St. Joseph’s Hospital – Main. Doctors and medical staff attempted to treat his injuries, but Anderson was pronounced dead at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Sunday.
The Florida Highway Patrol has assumed control of the case and will conduct the investigation into the collision.
Sheriff Chad Chronister issued a statement regarding the fatal incident on Sunday.
“The loss of life is always tragic. My deepest sympathies are with the entire Anderson family,” Sheriff Chronister said. “This tragedy weighs heavily on our entire Sheriff’s Office. We are committed to supporting a thorough investigation.”
Deputy Kennon has been employed with the Sheriff’s Office for eight years. HCSO records indicate he has no history of disciplinary actions, internal affairs investigations, or prior traffic crashes.
Per standard procedure following an officer-involved fatal incident, Deputy Kennon has been placed on administrative duty pending the final outcome of the Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation.
