Pennsylvania Mall Escalator “Bad Smell” Insult Ends In Stabbing Of Teen, Arrest

A casual joke between teenagers at a Pennsylvania mall turned violent on April 15, leaving a 14-year-old girl hospitalized and a 23-year-old man in police custody. Angel Ortiz faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault, following a knife attack that police say was sparked by an insult on an escalator.

The incident began at Willow Grove Park Mall in Abingdon, when the victim, who was at the mall with a group of friends, reportedly joked that one of her companions “smelled bad.”

According to the girl’s statement to investigators, the group then turned to Ortiz, who was standing directly behind them, and repeated the comment to him. The remark allegedly prompted Ortiz to begin shouting at the teenagers.

Witnesses and surveillance footage indicate that the dispute continued after the group stepped off the escalator.

Police reports state that Ortiz got close to the girl’s face and repeatedly challenged her to hit him. The victim admitted to investigators that she eventually struck Ortiz, at which point he allegedly produced a knife and stabbed her in the arms.

First responders arrived at the scene shortly after the attack. The girl was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of stab wounds that were described by medical staff as non-life-threatening.

Officers apprehended Ortiz at a bus stop less than 30 minutes after the encounter. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of two pocketknives.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Ortiz claimed he acted in self-defense, telling officers he was “scared for his life” after the girl hit him first. While surveillance video does show the girl following and hitting Ortiz prior to the stabbing, authorities moved forward with charges based on the nature of the response.

Ortiz is currently held on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime with intent, recklessly endangering another person, and harassment. He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on April 29.
