A Luzerne County man will spend at least the next 14 years in state prison following a Friday announcement by Attorney General Dave Sunday regarding a violent 2018 domestic assault.
Roberto Alvarez-Marquez, 38, of Hazleton, received a sentence of 14 to 30 years after pleading guilty to charges of aggravated assault and illegal possession of a firearm.
The sentencing, handed down Thursday, stems from an investigation into a shooting triggered by a domestic dispute. Authorities say Alvarez-Marquez became angry with his then-girlfriend because she had gone out for the evening with her friends.
When the woman returned to their home, Alvarez-Marquez shot her in the chest at close range.
While the victim survived the attack, officials noted she suffered severe internal injuries and is still in the process of recovery years later.

“Domestic violence of any nature cannot and will not be tolerated, particularly an act as horrific as this one,” Attorney General Sunday said in a statement following the sentencing. “The victim is alive today, but not for lack of effort by her attacker. We hope this conviction and sentence offer her a measure of justice as she continues on with her life.”
The case was handled by the Office of the Attorney General and prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Thomas Ost-Prisco. Alvarez-Marquez was barred from owning a weapon at the time of the shooting, leading to the additional firearms charge.
He begins his sentence effective immediately.
