Pennsylvania Man Sentenced To 65 Years In New Jersey Prison For Fatal Shooting Of Stepfather

A Pennsylvania man will spend several decades behind bars for killing his stepfather amid an argument about his sister’s houseguest while he was himself visiting relatives in New Jersey. Superior Court Judge William Ziegler handed down a 65-year State Prison sentence to 28-year-old Christian Smith for first-degree murder and second-degree possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose.

Under New Jersey law, Smith is required to serve 85% of that term before he can even be considered for parole.

The sentencing caps off a legal battle that began on October 9, 2021, inside a shared family home. According to court records and trial testimony, an argument broke out between Smith and his stepfather, Dennis McKenzie, Jr. The dispute started over derogatory remarks Smith made regarding the sexuality of McKenzie’s daughter and her friend.

As the fight escalated, Smith’s mother and sister tried to calm things down, with his mother physically stepping between the two men. When McKenzie attempted to strike Smith, Smith reached into his waistband, pulled out a 9mm handgun, held it over his mother, and opened fire. McKenzie was shot once in the face and three times in the back.

Immediately following the shooting, Smith took apart the firearm and used his phone to record a video of himself stating, “that’s what he gets.”

Throughout the two-week trial, defense attorney Logan Terry argued that Smith snapped in the heat of passion after McKenzie brought up past relationship abuse Smith had suffered. The defense also claimed a physical struggle occurred over the firearm, alleging that several accidental shots went off before Smith seized total control of the weapon.

However, Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Brook and the state’s trial team countered that Smith’s version of events completely contradicted the physical and forensic evidence collected at the scene. A jury ultimately agreed with the prosecution, returning a guilty verdict on January 20, 2026.

Following the sentencing, Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns released a statement reflecting on the case. “This sentence reflects the seriousness of the defendant’s violent actions and ensures he will be held accountable for taking a life,” Johns said. “I commend the work of the trial team in presenting the evidence in this case and securing a verdict that delivered justice for the victim.”
